چکیده

Hot-water extraction of hemicelluloses, especially galactoglucomannans, from fractions of ground spruce wood with different particle sizes was studied at 170°C with extraction times up to 60 min. Extraction of spruce sapwood, heartwood, and thermomechanical pulp (TMP) was also compared at 160 to 180°C. Static batch extractions were carried out in an accelerated solvent extractor (ASE). The extracted hemicelluloses were characterized by sugar unit analysis and determination of acetyl groups and molar masses. The particle size significantly affected the extraction of ground wood. The total extraction yield, as well as the yields of hemicelluloses and monosaccharides, was the highest from the finest ground wood fraction (< 0.1 mm). The release of acetic acid, average molar mass of extracted hemicelluloses, and end-pH of the extracts were also dependent of the particle size, although to a lower extent. Irrespectively of the ground wood particle size, the yield of hemicelluloses reached a plateau after 40 min extraction at 170°C. The results indicate that extraction of hemicelluloses is limited mainly by the diffusion in the fiber wall, and for coarse wood shives also by the mass transfer in the wood matrix. There were only small differences in the hotwater extraction yields of hemicelluloses from spruce sapwood, heartwood, and TMP, considering both polyand monosaccharides.

Hot Water Extraction of Hemicelluloses from Aspen Wood Chips of Different Sizes

Hot water extraction of hemicelluloses from aspen wood chips of different sizes and wood meal was performed, and the extracted hemicelluloses were characterized. With decreasing wood chip size, the total sugars and total polyand oligosaccharides extracted with hot water increased. The dissolution of hemicelluloses was mainly limited by diffusion in the fiber wall and mass transfer from fiber to...

Separation of polymeric galactoglucomannans from hot-water extract of spruce wood.

Two methods for separation of polymeric galactoglucomannans (GGMs) from a hot-water extract of spruce wood, i.e., membrane filtration and precipitation in ethanol-water, were compared. Filtration through a series of membranes with different pore sizes separated GGMs of different molar masses, from polymers to oligomers. Only polysaccharides were precipitated in ethanol-water. With the optimal w...

Effects of Particle Size on the Morphology and Water- and Thermo-Resistance of Washed Cottonseed Meal-Based Wood Adhesives

Water washing of cottonseed meal is more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly than protein isolation by means of alkaline extraction and acidic precipitation. Thus, water-washed cottonseed meal (WCSM) is more promising as biobased wood adhesives. In this work, we examined the effects of the particle size on the morphology and adhesive performance of WCSM. Pilot-scale produced and dried W...

Hot water extraction and steam explosion as pretreatments for ethanol production from spruce bark.

Spruce bark is a source of interesting polyphenolic compounds and also a potential but little studied feedstock for sugar route biorefinery processes. Enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation of spruce bark sugars to ethanol were studied after three different pretreatments: steam explosion (SE), hot water extraction (HWE) at 80 °C, and sequential hot water extraction and steam explosion (HWE+SE), ...

Determination of physical emulsion stabilization mechanisms of wood hemicelluloses via rheological and interfacial characterization.

Materials manufacturing industries seek efficient, economic, and sustainable compounds for stabilizing dispersed systems such as emulsions. In this study, novel, abundant biobased hydrocolloids spruce galactoglucomannans (GGM) and birch glucuronoxylans (GX) were obtained from a forestry biorefining process and characterized as versatile stabilizers of rapeseed oil-in-water emulsions. For the fi...
